James Nachtwey is one of the world's leading war photographers. He may not be a household name, but the extraordinarily powerful images of violence and suffering he has been taking for the past 25 years have seared their way into our collective unconscious. Following his subject to Kosovo, Indonesia, and the West Bank, Christian Frei stays close enough to Nachtwey to record his breathing, as the photographer dodges bullets, stones, and tear gas to capture remarkably fresh, compassionate images from some of the most dangerous, incendiary spots on the globe. Description adapted from Film Forum.
Tickets are available at www.mfa.org or at MFA Box Office or by calling 617/369-3016. Tickets are $7 ($6 for members, students, and seniors) except on Sat., July 1, at 2pm. Tickets for this program are $9 ($8 for members, students, and seniors).

In December of 2000, workers completely destroyed a pair of 1500-year old giant stone Buddhas in Bamiyan, Afghanistan. The demolition of these huge ancient relics took place in accordance Taliban edict that called for the eradication of all non-Muslim images. Director Christian Frei’s exploration of this act draws him through the almost impassable valley of Bamiyan to the war-torn streets of Kabul, from the monasteries of China to the universities of France. At the height of its speed, the film takes on the feel of an Indiana Jones-style archaeological thriller.

Digital technology enables the world to become increasingly interconnected as an entire economy becomes reliant upon a single, network infrastructure. While this offers tremendous opportunities to many industries, including financial, telecommunications, health, and transportation, it can also be a cause for concern if security issues are improperly addressed, or even neglected altogether. Crimes such as theft, fraud and extortion can occur in great magnitude within a matter of seconds. The new network-mediated economy paradoxically presents opportunities for the creation of good outcomes or the perpetuation of bad ones. Can an ultimate security be reached?
